The Secrets of Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery is a $10 billion a year industry, but Dr. Youn says that if you're looking to get a little nip or tuck, there are secrets you should know that could save you big money. Plus, find out what you need to look for when choosing the right plastic surgeon, and the secret weapon sometimes used in surgery that has Rachael jumping out of her seat! **How to get a non-surgical brow lift** A normal brow lift procedure takes about 90 minutes and can cost $5,000, but Dr. Youn explains that sometimes you can get a similar result without surgery - for around $25! "One out of every three patients that come to see me for a brow lift, I actually send them to my esthetician to have their brows waxed instead," he says. "The key is you want to wax the hair at the bottom of the brow, not the top. By going in from the bottom, it helps to elevate the brow." **Laser treatments vs. chemical peels** A typical deep laser treatment costs anywhere from $2,000-3,000, but Dr. Youn says you can often get a similar result for third of the price with chemical peels. "If you do the right kind," he says, "you can get a nice change similar to a laser." Dr. Youn demonstrates the Obagi blue peel, which he claims helps to tighten up the skin, remove fine lines and even improve blemishes. "The reason that I like it is because it comes with a blue dye that helps you actually keep the peel as light as you want to, so the risk of burns and of complications like that are actually minimized." **Is your plastic surgeon board-certified?** Dr. Youn advises to be wary of so-called "lunch-time face lifts" that claim to make big differences in less than an hour. "There are a lot of surgeons doing this who aren't even plastic surgeons," he says. "There are family docs performing liposuction, emergency room docs doing tummy tucks, and opthamologists doing breast augmentations." Dr. Youn suggests that when shopping for a plastic surgeon you look for the symbol of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. "Every member is a board-certified plastic surgeon, and on top of that, they're held to a certain high level of ethics, training and continuing medical education." **The secret weapon of plastic surgeons** Dr. Youn reveals that there is one thing plastic surgeons might use during surgery if complications arise with blood supply - leeches! "When we do a plastic surgery and we are having problems with a body part, like an ear or a finger, or even a nipple, that isn't healing right, we can always turn to the trusty leech to decrease the bad blood and increase the good blood," Dr. Youn says. "They can actually save the day!"
